America at PCC

Over a year ago, we caught up with PCC alumna America León. She transferred to UCLA in 2015 and earned her BA in communication studies. Then, in 2022, she returned to PCC to study business.

Now, America is getting her M.Ed. in Student Affairs from UCLA, and she’s setting out to change the world.

“I’m expected to graduate in June 2024,” she says. “I’d like to channel my extensive administrative experience into a dynamic role within student affairs, dedicated to empowering marginalized students.”

America’s journey has been a testament to the power of perseverance and the pursuit of dreams.

“I am fueled by my passion for immigration law and policy,” she says. “Ultimately, I want to collaborate with diverse student populations, ensuring equitable access to resources, guidance, and opportunities.”

At PCC, America flourished academically and discovered her passion for advocacy. She became involved in the Puente Project, earned scholarships, joined the United Without Boundaries Club, and cultivated life-long friendships that encouraged and supported her goals.

Along with the PCC Foundation, America maintains involvement with PCC’s Dream Resource Center, which aims to empower undocumented individuals at PCC and beyond.

“Volunteer work holds a special place in my heart as it allows me to directly impact communities in need, while also aiding in my own personal growth,” America says.

In collaboration with the Dream Resource Center and the PCC Foundation, America began fundraising for a scholarship program at PCC. With a goal of $10,000, the PCC Dream Scholarship: Ready Behind Degrees will further the College’s commitment to Institutional Equity, Diversity, and Justice by providing additional financial support to California Dream Act students.

“I was inspired to give back to my community because during my time at PCC, I got a $250 scholarship that helped me pay for half of my first DACA application,” says America. “It made a huge impact in my life.”
